About Sussex Air

Sussex Air is a partnership of local authorities across Sussex that has been working together since 2000 to improve air quality and protect public health. 

 The partnership brings together local authority air quality specialists to share expertise, coordinate work across Sussex, and provide consistent air quality information and advice for residents, businesses and stakeholders. 

 To work collaboratively across Sussex to improve air quality, protect public health and support the delivery of local, regional and national air quality objectives. 

• Improve air quality across Sussex. 
• Provide reliable and accessible air quality information. 
• Increase public awareness of air pollution and its health impacts. 
• Share technical knowledge, best practice and resources between partner authorities. 
• Develop and deliver joint projects, funding bids and initiatives. 
• Work with Public Health, transport authorities and other partners to support cleaner air. 
• Influence and respond to air quality policy at local and national levels. 

 The Sussex Air partners meet quarterly to: 

• Discuss air quality policy and best practice. 

• Review current air quality issues and emerging research. 

• Share technical knowledge and experience. 

• Review partnership contracts and projects. 

• Agree budgets and funding priorities. 

• Develop joint funding bids and collaborative projects. 

• Work with Public Health and transport colleagues on shared priorities. 

 The partnership also responds to Government consultations where appropriate and contributes to national air quality discussions through representation on DEFRA’s Local Authority Air Quality Advisory Group. 

 A key role of Sussex Air is providing residents with clear, accessible and up-to-date air quality information. 

 The Sussex Air website includes: 

• Near real-time air quality monitoring data. 
• Annual nitrogen dioxide (NO₂) monitoring results. 
• Local Authority Air Quality Annual Status Reports. 
• Technical reports and guidance. 
• Information on the health impacts of air pollution. 
• Advice on reducing exposure to air pollution. 
• Raising Awareness. 

Sussex Air works throughout the year to raise awareness of air pollution and the simple actions people can take to help improve air quality and protect their health. 

 This includes communications campaigns, partnership working with Public Health and NHS organisations, and targeted promotion around events such as Clean Air Day and Clean Air Night. Through social media, digital communications and local authority networks, Sussex Air supports consistent air quality messaging across Sussex. 

Sussex Air appoints a specialist contractor to manage and maintain its shared air quality data services. 

Following a competitive tender process, WSP was appointed as the partnership’s data management contractor from 1 January 2026. The contractor is responsible for: 

• Managing the Sussex Air website. 
• Collecting air quality monitoring data. 
• Validating and ratifying monitoring data. 
• Publishing and disseminating air quality information and results. 

The Sussex Air website was refreshed in 2026 as part of this contract, providing an improved source of local air quality information and advice for residents and stakeholders across Sussex.
