Introduction:

The Sussex Air Quality Steering Group SAQSG and National Society for Clean Air (NSCA) have proposed to build upon the experience and information gained from projects to further our knowledge and provide both environmental and health related information to sensitive populations across “Rives Manche/Channel” region, of Sussex, Normandy and Picardie, on Ozone. It is therefore proposing an InterregIIIA project with partners across the region called Air Rives Manche Ozone: ARMO.

The partners in the ARMO project are:

 SAQSG (Sussex Air Quality Steering Group)
 NSCA (National Society for Clean Air)
 University of Brighton
 Atmo Picardie (Air Quality Institute – Picardie)
 Air Normand (Air Quality Institute – Normandy)

Air pollution and especially ozone is a trans-boundary issue, which effects both rural and urban populations cross regions. The recent 2003 summer heat-wave and resulting incidents of high ozone pollution in France and the SE of England demonstrated how far reaching pollution affected the health of sensitive populations.

Many deaths in the regions were attributed to poor air quality as a result of the weather and so the group has joined a partnership of air quality experts from the region to assess the impacts of ozone. As a result we are proposing a program of monitoring and information research on ozone pollution across the “Rives Manche/Channel” region.
