InterregIIIA Project: Air Rives Manche Ozone (ARMO)

ARMO Project Outline

Partnership Project Activities:

The partnership has been established to enable sharing of experience and information between partners. SAQSG will partner NSCA, Atmo Picardie and Air Normand in the project and to achieve the project objectives SAQSG will undertake a number of actions.

1.   Enhance the Sussex, Normandy and Picardie monitoring networks to provide a wider distribution of O3 monitoring data inland.
1.1. Enhance O3 network with diffusion tube surveys, real-time analysers and newly developed Franco-Swiss O3 detectors.
1.2. Improve the spatial distribution of information and study coastal vs. inland pollutant concentrations across both regions
2.

Study the distribution of pollutants inland and identify a pollution profile across Sussex.

2.1 Profile O3 pollution levels and distribution across the “ARMO” regions with GIS and mapping.
2.2 Provide and share data for emissions inventory.
3.   Enhance real time “pollution incident bulletins” to Health authorities and sensitive populations. The forecasts would allow strategic planning for health authorities, so those incidences of increased respiratory complaints could be better managed.
3.1. Assess needs and identify the most vulnerable populations and target those groups with the most current information.
3.2. Study French methods of forecasting and run pilot scheme in two PCT (Public Care Trust) areas to assess effectiveness of forecasting.
3.3. Review and enhance O3 forecasting in UK and France, by shared data resources and experience of mutual understanding of how each system operates.
4.

Measure pollutant exposures to sensitive populations such as school children, asthma sufferers, the elderly and other respiratory sensitive people. SASQSG will undertake studies on behalf of partnership and build on Interreg II research.

4.1. Run and assist partners projects at schools and for elderly people at several locations.
4.2. Assess indoor and outdoor exposure of O3.
4.3. Research historical & current hospital intakes and mortalities related to O3 pollution incidents in Sussex and France.

5.   Provide multi-media and interactive information on AQ and sources of pollutants via AQ web-site and assist with conference and workshops.
5.1. Co-ordinate with NSCA on information and assistance to other partner groups for workshops, seminars and conference on O3.
5.2. Assist NSCA and other partners in establishing an ARMO web-site.
5.3. With the assistance of NSCA and partners SAQSG will provide information for educational info-packs on O3 pollution to schools and sensitive population through clinics/ respiratory health experts.
