airALERT 2008 (Open for Registration)

Air Pollution Alert Service for people in Sussex.

airAlert is operational from May 2008 for people to receive FREE ALERTS during elevated air pollution periods. We are to run the service for asthma sufferers, along with enlarging the service for children with asthma through schools with airAlert-4-schools in Sussex. airAlert-4-schools competition 2008(closed).

We want young people with asthma to understand that if warned, with information from services like airAlert, that they can still have enjoyable active lives.

The competition has closed and our celebrity judge (David Shepherd - Sussex Wildlife painter and conservationist www.davidshepherd.org) has reviewed all the entries and has been greatly impressed by the all the of the childrens colourful and thoughtful posters.

The winners and runners ups will be notified, through their schools in mid September. We will have £50.00 bike vouchers for each group winner and airAlert boomerangs as 10 runner-up prizes for each 3 different age/year groups.

News Headlines

airAlert news: Hertfordshire and Bedfordshire Air Pollution Monitoring Network are to join airAlert, starting in November 2008. (Herts and Beds AQ Network). The service will integrate the initial Luton airAlert service and will be jointly provided by Sussex-air and King's College London (ERG).

Sussex-air and the Met Office are to join forces to provide airAlert COPD alerts for patients during the winter. airAlert COPD will be launched this year to provide winter time warnings to patients in Sussex who have COPD. Biomass and air quality issues - The London councils recent report into the impacts of biomass on air quality raised some interesting issues regarding biomasses possible impacts on air quality management areas. LACORS - A new toolkit to help councils improve local air quality and climate change has been launched by the Local Authorities Coordinators of Regulatory Services (LACORS).The LACORS Air Quality Toolkit (link) is aimed at councillors and environmental protection officers and provides practical examples of how councils can address the problem of poor air quality. Air Quality Management Area's in Sussex : 5 Local Authorities in Sussex have declared 6 AQMA's (Adur D.C.(2), Brighton and Hove C.C., Chichester D.C., Hastings B.C. and Lewes D.C. ) Most declarations are for nitrogen dioxide (NO2) except for Hastings where the AQMA was declare on exceedences of the particulate (PM10) objective.
