04/09/2009 - Additional AURN Monitoring Station in Eastbourne
News image for Additional AURN Monitoring Station in Eastbourne Defra have recently expanded the Automatic Urban and Rural network (AURN) to include an additional site in Eastbourne, East Sussex. The site was installed and data collection began during the middle of May 2009 at Willingdon Trees Community Centre and currently measures PM10 and PM2.5 using the Filter Dynamic Measurement System (FDMS). It is also intended that a Nitrogen Oxides monitor will be added in the near future.

The location was chosen in response to the European Union Air Quality Directive requirement that member states reduce the exposure of the population to PM2.5 through the ‘exposure concentration obligation’ and the ‘national exposure reduction target’ both of which are based on measurements at urban background locations. Measurements are required from locations with populations larger than 100,000 for these assessments and Eastbourne was consequently chosen as a representative location.

Eastbourne already monitors Nitrogen Oxides, Ozone and PM10 at a background location in Devonshire Park. The new AURN site is a welcome addition to the Sussex Air Quality Network providing a more complete coverage of air quality monitoring across the county thus enhancing our understanding of air pollution behavior in the region.
