Research Projects

Sussex-air have undertaken and participated in many projects relative to air quality. We have undertaken local, regional and cross border projects with many partners, see "Recent Projects". The Sussex partners have benefited from many projects through providing new and enhanced monitoring across the region, as well as providing links with partners in health, education, cross channel institutions regional and government bodies.

The partnership is proposing several projects in the near future and are to work with a wider range of partners in the region, refer to "Future project proposals".

Future Project proposals:

Recent Projects:

Project title: InterregIII- microproject
Project period: 2006/7
Project Objectives: The objective of the micro-project was to utilise the Atmo-Picardie Air Quality Mobile Laboratory ("Mobi") to compare measurements of air pollutants near schools and surrounding communities in our regions of Sussex and Picardie.
Project Partners: UK -*Sussex-air & East Sussex County Council. France – Atmo Picardie, SANEF
Project outputs: Comparative measurements of air pollution undertaken at 2 schools in Sussex region. Comparative audit measurements of air pollution monitoring stations
Support: EU Interreg III funding.
Further details: Contact Nigel Jenkins (nigel.jenkins@lewes.gov.uk)
Project title: airAlert pilot
Project period: 2006
Project Objectives: Assess the capability of targeted air quality forecasts.
Project Partners: *Sussex-air, King’s College London (ERG) and University of Brighton.
Project outputs: Pilot established delivery capability and research outlining service satisfaction and evaluation. Enabled Sussex-air to redevelop and establish airAlert service.
Support: DEFRA air quality grants and EU Interreg III funding.

Project title: EU InterregIII Project ARMO: (Air Rives Manche- Ozone/ozone across the channel)
Project period: 2005 - 07
Project Objectives: Assess the impacts of ozone in the cross channel region. (Health and Environment).
Project Partners: UK -*Sussex-air, NSCA/EPuk, University of Brighton. France – Atmo Picardie, Air Normande, INERIS.

Project title: EU InterregII Project: (Air Rives Manche- Santé/Health and air quality across the channel)
Project period: 1999 -2001
Project Objectives: The project correlated respiratory disease and mortality rates with air pollutant levels. The project was established to assess the significance of air pollution in the regions.
Project Partners: UK –East Sussex County council, *Sussex-air/SAQSG, France – Atmo Picardie, Air Normande.

Project title: EU InterregII Project: (Air Rives Manche - Sensibilisation/ measuring across the channel
Project period: 1999 -2001
Project Objectives: This project increased monitoring capability of the regions networks for ozone and PM10 (both important transboundary pollutants). The project also sought to raise awareness of air quality and provide information on actions that can be taken to reduce individual contributions to air pollution.
Project Partners: UK –East Sussex County council, *Sussex-air/SAQSG, France – Atmo Picardie, Air Normande.
